New Artwork: Rewilding

The Story behind the Artwork

This new artwork pays homage to one of the most adaptive animals on our planet: the fox. In London, it is very frequent to see them roaming the streets at night and they are one of the last and rare wild animals one can still witness in the city.

At a time when we are going through so many changes due to the climate crisis, it is certainly not a bad idea to turn to these animals and admire their extraordinary capacity to be resilient and adapt to any type of environment, as well as to human expansion.

I actually found this fox one afternoon sleeping in my back garden in London and I was so excited to be able to witness it. It made me reflect about how we invite nature and the wilderness in general into our cities today. For me, they are part of the wonders of life.

But, as we know it, it remains rare in the modern world to truly be able to cohabitate with the wild without wanting to control, regulate, eliminate. Yet we know the benefits of the proximity to nature; yet we know the awe-effect wildlife has on us too. Do we truly want to do without it?

The success of the documentary “My Octopus Teacher”, celebrating its one-year anniversary since its release in September last year, makes me think otherwise. People still resonate very much with the natural world and its wonders, because we are nature itself, and we need that connection.

So this is exactly the purpose of this artwork: to inspire us to rewild our life, to rewild our environments, to reconnect with nature and its wildlife and invite them to flourish and thrive. Our planet doesn't belong to the human race, there is so much more life on it to share it with.

The Artistic Direction

The artwork is fully hand-drawn with the addition of the lettering ‘Rewilding’.

Green is the predominant colour to emphasise the need we have to reconnect with nature and invite it to grow and expand, for our own benefit.

The plants are claiming a big part of the artwork highlighting the fact we must relinquish some control and allow nature to reclaim some of its territory, allowing it to flourish rather than simply protecting and preserving what best serves us.

The fox is hiding behind the greenery emphasizing the fact that their behaviour certainly helped them to adapt and survive, even in big, busy cities.

It also highlights the fact that we, humans, are far from always being inviting with them and in turn it invites us to question how we can create a more harmonious existence for the benefits of all, in our interconnectedness.

Charity Support

Rewilding sadly doesn’t concern only urban environments but also very much so natural environments too. So much nature needs replenishment and how can we expect to create urban oases if we don’t take care of the existing nature around us first.

For this reason, our 10% art pledge for the planet on this artwork will go to ‘Rewilding Britain’, a charity whose mission and manifesto is to protect, restore and regenerate species-rich mosaics of habitats, rewilding to help reverse biodiversity loss and bring back the abundance of Britain’s wildlife.

It only made sense to support them with this artwork as the fox is British from London.
